What Is Integrative Counselling?
When people begin looking for counselling, they often come across different types of therapy: person-centred counselling, psychodynamic therapy, CBT, transactional analysis, solution-focused therapy and many more.
It can feel confusing knowing which approach is “right” for you.
This is where integrative counselling can be helpful.
Integrative counselling means that the therapist does not use one single model for every client. Instead, they draw from a range of therapeutic approaches and tailor the work to the individual person sitting in front of them.
At Novara Counselling & Coaching, this means I work with you as a whole person; your emotions, experiences, relationships, patterns, hopes, fears and goals.
A Flexible Approach to Therapy
No two people come to counselling with exactly the same story.
One person may want support with anxiety or low mood. Another may be grieving, navigating a difficult relationship, feeling stuck in old patterns, or trying to rebuild their confidence after a painful experience.
Integrative counselling allows the work to be shaped around you, rather than expecting you to fit into one fixed way of working.
Some sessions may be gentle and reflective. Others may be more practical and focused on understanding patterns, building self-awareness, exploring boundaries, or developing new ways of coping.
The pace is always something we work with together.
What Approaches Can Integrative Counselling Include?
Integrative counselling may draw on several therapeutic ideas, depending on what feels helpful for you.
This might include:
Person-centred counselling
This places importance on feeling heard, accepted and understood. It offers a safe, non-judgmental space where you can explore what is happening for you.
Psychodynamic ideas
This can help us explore how past experiences, early relationships or unconscious patterns may still be influencing how you feel, respond or relate today.
CBT-informed work
This can help you notice links between your thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and behaviours, especially when working with anxiety, low mood or self-critical thinking.
Transactional Analysis
This can support understanding of communication patterns, relationship dynamics and the different parts of ourselves that may show up in daily life.
Solution-focused and coaching-informed tools
These can help you look at what is working, what you want to move towards, and what small changes may support you going forward.
Integrative counselling is not about using techniques randomly. It is about carefully choosing what may best support your needs, your personality, and the stage of life you are in.
Why Might Someone Choose Integrative Counselling?
Integrative counselling can be helpful if you are looking for support with:
- Anxiety or overwhelm
- Low mood
- Grief and loss
- Stress
- Low self-esteem
- Relationship difficulties
- Family or mother-daughter relationship patterns
- Boundaries
- Repeating emotional patterns
- Life changes or transitions
- Feeling disconnected from yourself
- Understanding why you respond the way you do
It can also be helpful if you are not entirely sure what you need yet.
Sometimes people come to therapy knowing exactly what they want to work on. Others simply know that something does not feel right, or that they are tired of carrying things alone.
Both are valid starting points.
Counselling That Looks Back and Moves Forward
One of the strengths of integrative counselling is that it can support both understanding and change.
Sometimes we need to look back to understand what has shaped us. This might involve exploring family dynamics, past experiences, attachment patterns, emotional wounds, or ways of coping that once made sense but may now feel limiting.
At other times, we may need to focus on the present and future. This might involve building confidence, strengthening boundaries, developing healthier communication, or finding new ways to respond to life’s challenges.
At Novara, my work brings together the depth of counselling with the forward-focus of coaching. This means we can explore where things may have come from, while also gently considering what you need now and what might help you move forward.
Is Integrative Counselling Right for Me?
Integrative counselling may be a good fit if you want therapy that feels personal, flexible and responsive.
Rather than following a rigid structure, integrative counselling allows space for your needs to unfold naturally. You do not need to arrive with the “right” words, a clear plan, or a perfectly formed reason for seeking support.
Come as you are.
Together, we can begin to make sense of what is happening, at a pace that feels manageable.
